The first step to take to try to fix this issue is to go to QuickTime preferences and make sure it is set up to recognize and play your desired MIME types. If configured properly, the newest versions of QuickTime can play properly encoded and named MPEG-1 media files. I'll assume that you have the most recent version of QuickTime installed.
